Special Event: Transport House - Open House Belfast
Sat 22 October 2016, 15:00 – 17:00 BST
For half a century, Transport House was home to the Transport and General Workers’ Union, whose 2 million strong membership made it the biggest trade union in Britain and Ireland. A British-based union organised on an all-island basis, the T&G in Northern Ireland provided a collective voice for all workers regardless of community or political background. As such, union representatives were tasked with responding not only to the unique economic challenges facing the region, but also the persistent threat of sectarianism and violence that often spilled into the workplace.
At key moments in our history, Transport House was the setting for crucial debates and decisions that helped define the labour movement’s response to acts of violence, sectarian incidents and events of wider political significance, and its contribution to the building of peace and reconciliation.
Using T&G archives retrieved from Transport House, together with personal testimonies of veteran union activists, this very special event will sketch an outline history of the union over the tumultuous period in question.
