Description

When, Why and How?

The need to understand the significance of the many additional or special tests as well as reproduce them accurately has created a demand for this course programme that provides a clear explanation of when and why each test should be used and how to perform the manoeuvres accurately. The programme covers the theory underpinning the use of special tests in the examination and blends this with clinically relevant anatomy, the significance of a positive test, appropriate investigations with hands-on practical time supervised be experienced clinical tutors.

Of course, the tests themselves are not 'special' - they derived their name in the same way as 'special questions' found their way into the clinical examination. And yes, individually they don't add much - a bit like relying on the answer of one individual question in your history. Supposing a patient admits pain at night. Does that mean they have a malignancy? Of course not! Adding special tests to the examination can add clarity, increase your index of suspicion and increases your confidence in the clinical reasoning process. During the course you will be able to:

  • Understand the evidence around clinical tests

  • Perform the tests accurately

  • Review functional anatomy and biomechanics relevant to special tests

  • Integrate test into your clinical practice and review appropriate imaging

  • Problem solving scenarios and practical time

Who is it for?

All clinicians involved in managing musculoskeletal disorders including physiotherapists, advanced
role practitioners, doctors,GPWSI, podiatrists, osteopaths, chiropractors, sport therapists etc. The course is not suited for undergraduate students. A minimum of two years MSK clinical experience is recommended.

Cost

Special Tests & Advanced Clinical Reasoning - 2 Day Course £350

What our students say

"This short course by far surpassed my expectations! Having worked in physio for 17 years and in MSK for at least ten, I am no newbie, but never felt entirely comfortable basing my conclusions on the myriad of tests out there. The foundation courses changed the way I assess and even think and helped me evolve but this course finally made me confident in choosing the right test and confidently including it in my decisions. DO IT! Don’t wait as long as I did".

"The course material was of a high standard and I acquired new assessment skills as well as refining existing handling techniques. It was a comfortable learning environment which promoted open discussion and interaction between students and tutors”

"The module has helped me look at the practical application of tests, to improve my handling skills and keep up to date with current practice. The tutors encouraged us to think about the rationale, reasoning and evidence behind the tests and to actively discuss this with the rest of the group”

"Very enjoyable course. Excellent review of functional anatomy and biomechanics”

“A solid course well put together and planned and delivered with expertise and variety”

“Excellent course, lots of clinically relevant content, tutors worked very hard with good lectures and practical demonstration”

"Good structure and especially liked to learn new ways of doing the tests and learned to choose which test for different pathologies. I liked the focus on really questioning yourself what are we testing- when, how and why"

Special Tests Course v Module?

The course is open to anyone interested in advancing their examination and clinical reasoning skills as a stand alone 2 day course. The cost for this is £350.
