There must be people in an ELT organisation in Scotland able to take the lead in child protection and student well-being issues. The lead members of the Designated Child Protection Team take responsibility for delivering proper levels of student well-being to their under 18 students. One of the lead members should be from the organisation’s SMT so that responsibility for child protection is understood from the very top.

This half-day course helps the lead person(s) understand their responsibilities, especially what will happen if they need to manage a child protection incident involving social care and/or the police. The session also looks at many practical problems ELT faces looking after under 18 students. Participants should have completed Designated Child Protection Officer training (Level 2) for Scotland.

Safeguarding legislation and terminology differs in each of the countries of the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The focus of the training will be on legislation and terminology in Scotland. Delegates from England and Wales are advised that safeguarding provision there differs substantially and separate training is available from English UK.
