The field of developmental cognitive neuroscience has undergone an unprecedented expansion and technological development in the past decade, creating new opportunities to carry out ground-breaking research on the emergence and establishment of brain-behaviour relationships in the young, with implications for infants, children and adolescents as they mature into adulthood.

WORKSHOP BACKGROUND:

The ability to articulate speech appears to be a unique feature of the human condition, yet historically research has focused on language abilities and speech perception, with a critical lack of focus on the motoric act of speech.  It is estimated that 2-10% of children have a communication disorder, with negative impact on schooling.  Speech disorders also affect people with stroke, genetic, and degenerative conditions.  Speech impairments may reduce active participation in society and then result in social isolation.  What do we know about the brain basis for the speech disorders?  What progress has been made in identifying their genetic basis?

In this workshop, leading researchers will outline some of the latest findings on the behavioural, neural and genetic causes of speech disorders throughout the lifespan.  The meeting will offer an exciting opportunity to discuss the clinical implications
