Event description

Description

Writing a speech isn’t like writing an article or a novel. It is a completely different ball game with a completely different set of rules. Many people end up giving speeches without ever having learnt to do it properly.

This workshop will cover the essential theory behind speechwriting, explore how we can use rhetoric to write powerful and compelling speeches, use examples of best practice and offer practical tips.

Outline of workshop:

  • Writing for a live audience (and trying to keep them alive)
  • Structuring different types of speeches – The Good the Bad and the Ugly
  • Researching for a speech
  • Using rhetoric and style to write powerful and compelling speeches
  • Adding humour to a speech (and knowing when it is appropriate to do so)

This workshop will be delivered by Guy Doza, who has worked for political organisations in Westminster and the European Parliament. Guy has worked with a number of high-profile political figures, delivered training to MSPs and worked some MSPs on their maiden speeches.

This workshop is open only to elected members of Scottish Local Authorities.
