'Speed Bookclubbing': Four Short Stories From China
Sat 19 March 2016, 13:30 – 15:30 GMT
We’re holding our first ‘speed-bookclubbing’ event, where four highly acclaimed literary translators (Nicky Harman, Helen Wang, Emily Jones and Roddy Flagg) will be joining us to discuss four stories from China that focus on highly-charged issues such as sexual freedom, political disappearances and ‘left-over’ women. The stories are all in English translation and discussion will be in English.
You can download all four stories from our website here, where you can also find more information about the stories and translators. There’s even a cheat sheet available to download if you don’t have time to read through all 4 short stories in advance!
The stories will be discussed (in English) for around twenty minutes each in rotating groups led by an experienced translator. You’ll get a chance to ask any questions you like. But most of all, this is an interactive event: we want to hear what you think, which ones you liked (or not) and what intrigued or puzzled you!
We're delighted to be working with Read Paper Republic to bring you this event, which has previously been held with great success in London and Beijing. Read Paper Republic are a collective of literary translators promoting new Chinese fiction in translation, and publish a Chinese short story in English translation every week.
