Review:

What is immediately striking in Brendan Walter’s SPELL is the scenery. Set in Iceland, Eric Bader’s cinematography captures the strange mysticism of the place; an ancient magic rumbling beneath the hot springs and behind the towering waterfalls. Director Walter seems to understand the magic inherent to the land and its natural monuments and he melds this feeling to his narrative, one which takes keen interest in the runic incantations of days long past. But this film is not a historical fantasy film, but rather a modern take on a man’s psychology - melded with the mysticism of his setting, Walter comes upon an entirely novel premise.

This more prosaic element of the film rests on the shoulders of Barak Hardley, who both stars and writes. An alumnus of popular television shows such as MASTER OF NONE and THE OFFICE, Hardley achieves a keen balance of comedy and melancholy. He plays the bumbling American tourist for the film’s opening, but one who slowly reveals suppressed anxieties. At its best SPELL resembles much less the comedy that it opens as, and more a psychological, supernatural mystery movie. An unusual category, to be sure, but appropriate for this unique film. / Review by Milo Garner
