Spinout Success

Wednesday 31st January 2018, 12-2pm (Lunch provided)

BizzInn – 2nd Floor IRD, Birmingham Research Park

So you’ve got an idea for a product or service and you want to set up a new company?  Who do you turn to?  What’s involved?  What are the options? How do we make it happen?

University research sometimes yields a discovery that has the potential to improve quality of life, health or even save lives. However, for any discovery to make an impact it needs to be turned into a product or service.  The most common commercial route for innovative research and academic IP is through licensing to an existing company.

However, when a technology or invention is highly disruptive to an existing way of thinking, is a complete change of paradigm, or is a new platform technology that can be applied over multiple markets, and where the commercial returns on investment might be significant, the establishment of a new company may well be the best way to commercialise the associated IP.

University Spinout Companies are an excellent route to research impact as well as commercial success. For those academics involved in spinout activities, it is an exciting route, although it is by no means the easy-route.  They require an even greater investment of time and money to build the infrastructure necessary to commercialise the technology.

In this seminar you will hear from experts about the journey to creating a successful spinout company. We will cover:

 1.    The Ingredients that make a Successful Spinout by Dr Nick Gostick, Spinout Development Manager at University of Birmingham

2.    Attracting Finance into Spinouts by Dr Brijesh Roy from Mercia Fund Management

3.    The Evolution of a Spinout Patent Portfolio by Dr Jenny Atkinson from Barker Brettell

4.    Case study by Dr Matt Hicks from Linear Diagnostics, a University of Birmingham Spinout
