Spirituality is a key area for nurturing and developing within everyone. It can impact deeply on an individual’s life, character, faith and beliefs. In the church school context it can also make a powerful contribution to the school’s Christian distinctiveness.
For spiritual development to be the most meaningful and effective it needs to be part of a pupil’s holistic education. A school needs to develop a shared interpretation of spirituality and ensure that opportunities for developing spirituality are planned for throughout school life. A Church of England school has a particular responsibility for growing this within its Christian context.
This day will include:
• Models of spiritual development
• The importance of schools developing a shared interpretation of spirituality
• Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC) within a Church of England context
• How spiritual development links with Religious Education (RE), other curriculum areas and Collective Worship
• How spiritual development links with other areas of school life
• Progression in spiritual development
• Writing a spiritual development / SMSC policy for a Church of England school
• SMSC as inspected under Ofsted
• Spirituality and the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) Evaluation Schedule
