The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, is pleased to present a special screening of the film La virgen roja as part of the SPLAS Film Club 2025-2026.
Directed by Manuel Lombardero, La virgen roja takes us back to 1930s Spain through the fascinating life of Hildegart Rodríguez Carballeira, a prodigious young woman conceived and educated by her mother Aurora to become the woman of the future. From an early age, Hildegart emerged as one of the brightest and most controversial minds of her time, becoming a European reference in female sexuality and feminism.
At 18, Hildegart begins to experience personal and emotional freedom after meeting Abel Velilla, who encourages her to break free from her mother’s strict control and to explore a broader and more complex world.
This film offers a deep exploration of the struggle for female autonomy, education, maternal control, and social tensions in pre-Civil War Spain.
📽️ The screening will be in Spanish with English subtitles.
