Sport Business & Marketing
Michelle Allen, EKIN Air Team, Nike
Michelle graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2014 with a Masters in Sports Business. Having been immersed in sport from a young age representing her country, Wales, in cross country throughout junior level she knew she wanted a career involved in sport. Whilst injury forced her to step back from the track, Michelle studied for her Masters in Sports Business. After graduating, she secured a role on the EKIN-Airteam at Nike, handing in her dissertation on the Friday and starting her new role on the Monday!
Since joining Nike in September 2014 her sporting involvement, knowledge and skills developed through her sport and studies over the years have been invaluable. Over the past year she has worked as part of the EKIN Air Team building relationship and educating retailers across England.
Leeds Beckett Alumni presentations:
Charlotte Kew, Senior Account Executive - Octagon
Charlotte graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2012 with a 1st Class Honours Degree in BA Sports Marketing and Public Relations. Whilst the ink was still drying on her graduation photo, Charlotte sprinted straight down to London to facilitate Coca-Cola’s premium hospitality programme at the London 2012 Olympic Games. From there, Charlotte secured a job at Lexis, a leading PR and communications agency, activating Barclays sponsorship of the Premier League.
In May 2014, completely unrelated to Liverpool’s dramatic Premier League loss, and that slip from Steven Gerrard… Charlotte decided to switch sports and joined Octagon to chase the egg shaped ball. For the past two years she has been activating AIG’s sponsorship of the New Zealand Rugby Team, including work across the HSBC Sevens World Series and of course, the England 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Leah Sandamas, Event Co-ordinator - Octagon
Leah graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2014 with a 1st Class Honours degree in Sports Marketing. Leah caught the event buzz early, having worked on her first event aged 14 and has been busy running around with an earpiece and clipboard ever since. Leah has worked on live sporting events including: Grand Depart of the Tour de France in London (2007) and Yorkshire (2014), National Road Race Championships and the London 2012 Olympic Games. After graduating, she took a few months out to travel and came back refreshed and ready to jump into a career. Leah joined Octagon in April 2015 where her event expertise have been invaluable over the past 9 months; working across two major clients, AIG and Stella Artois, covering events including the HSBC World Sevens Series, Wimbledon and England 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Ben Sollosi, BA (Hons) Sport Business Management (2010)
Ben completed his BA (Hons) Sport Business Management in 2010, gaining knowledge, skills and experience in Sports Law, Sports Marketing, Sport Sponsorship and Sports Finance.
Ben secured a coveted internship at IMG ( global leader in sports, events, media and fashion, operating in more than 25 countries) working on events such as The FA Cup Final, The Champions League Final, England Football matches and Capital One matches. He credits this internship at shaping his skills in team work, liaising with client, organisation and time management. He was able to develop his creative ideas and add value to projects, as well as the overall management of key areas such as marketing, ticketing and event day experiences.
After a successful internship, Ben became Senior Account Executive and then went onto the consulting division to work for major brand AG Barr on activating its sponsorship of the Commonwealth Games. Bens drive and passion for learning continued throughout this role, managing challenges AG Barr faced - such as delivering their rights as effectively and efficiently as possible and to ensure they were achieving brand objectives. Working with so many stakeholder group at an event as big such as the Commonwealth games highlighted high level management and communication skills at all levels.
After the Commonwealth Games he left to work for a sports agency (Sports Revolution), his role was to help brands identify the best rights to purchase in sports in order to achieve brand objectives. An important part of his role was his input and advice to rights holders to become more creative with their rights to increase demand and find other brands to forge partnerships.
Show casing his enterprenieural skills Ben has now set up his own company, where he helps rights holders create opportunities in China in a market which I believe is going to very soon become one of the biggest markets in the sports industry for investment.
The Careers in Sport LIVE event has sold out to the general public, but we have tickets allocated for students that haven't already booked. Wristbands will be available for all to collect from Fairfax Reception week commencing 25 January 2016.
