Sporting Heritage Silverstone study visit

Thursday 26 April 2018

Sporting Heritage invite you to attend our next study day and enjoy an exclusive preview of one of the UK's largest and most exciting sporting heritage developments – The Silverstone Experience. This study visit will:

  • Support your understanding of current sporting heritage developments in the UK;
  • Tell you about some of the latest interpretation techniques used in sporting heritage display and access; and
  • Give you an opportunity to network with other people interested in sporting heritage

Awarded £18.3 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Silverstone Heritage Ltd are currently creating a major visitor attraction in a former WWII hangar, bringing Silverstone and British motor racing to life for motor sport enthusiasts, the general ‘day out’ audience and people interested in the history of the area. This study visit will explore the development of the project from conception to reality.

When The Silverstone Experience opens in early 2019:

  • Visitors will be able to explore Silverstone’s fascinating history using technology, artefacts and interactive displays that will tell the stories behind this famous track – from medieval monks and WWII air crew to the racing drivers of today
  • A permanent exhibition will take visitors through motor racing past, present and future
  • The unique British Racing Drivers’ Club archive and motor sport collections will be available at the Collections & Research Centre
  • A series of themed tours will include iconic sites around the circuit; and a programme of motor sport events, talks and workshops will be offered
  • Engaging workshops for school groups will inspire the next generation of young engineers
  • For more information about The Silverstone Experience please visit www.silverstone-experience.co.uk

This event is open to anybody involved or interested in sporting heritage and the programme will include:

  • An introduction to Sporting Heritage: how we can support you to care for and provide access to sporting heritage collections; how you can become a member; and how you can get involved in our regional networks
  • An overview of The Silverstone Experience project from Sally Reynolds, Chief Executive of Silverstone Heritage Ltd
  • A presentation about the collections and the interpretive proposals by Vicky Worpole, Director of Collections, Education & Learning
  • A display of items from the British Racing Drivers' Club Archive, including records, photographs, trophies and paintings
  • A mini-tour of the Silverstone circuit
  • Buffet lunch and refreshments
  • The chance to meet other people involved with sporting heritage
