Description

Sports Nutrition and Athletic Development - The BTN Academy Conference November 17th 2019

It's time to learn the latest in nutritional science and the art of coaching. It’s time for the BTN Conference, and this time it’s a focus on sports nutrition and performance enhancement, both for the elite and the everyday athlete.

This is our 2nd conference of the year, this time in Manchester.

If you are keen to understand the nutritional needs of high-performance individuals, the mindset needed to succeed at the elite level, and the strategies that the elite athletes use, then this is the conference for you.

We will be welcoming a string of incredible speakers for this event, including a GB age group athlete, a sports psychologist and tutors from The BTN Academy.

What are we teaching throughout the day?

Days itinerary:

11.30-12.00pm - Registration and hellos

12-12.15pm - Welcome with Ben Coomber

Ben will introduce the day, the speakers, and set the tone for an awesome day of learning about sports nutrition and optimal human performance.

12.15-1.15pm – Endurance Nutrition for Elite Performance with Phil Paterson (BSc, QCF)

Learn the strategies Phil uses as a triathlete and coach in his own training and competition for optimalperformance. Phil will outline his programming baselines, periodisation cycles, tips and of course the science behind optimising the human body for endurance performance.

Who is Phil Patterson?

Phil is a competitive triathlete based in London with over 10 years of experience as a coach and athlete, competing at two GB Age Group World Champs over standard distance triathlon and since moving up to Half-Iron distance racing has competed at the Ironman 70.3 World Champs in South Africa in 2018. Phil works to improve performance for everyday people, enhance biomechanics and movement, and optimise other athletes fuelling to win.

1.15pm-2pm – The Plant Powered Athlete with Tom Bainbridge (CISSN)

What do we need to be aware of for the plant or vegan based athlete to ensure we don't succumb to any deficiencies and maximise performance, recovery and hypertrophy? This is a prominent area of discussion in the current sports nutrition world and with consumer trends, so we need to be wary of deficiencies that could lead to a decline in performance very quickly, and over time. This is a theory-based talk with guidance on practical application, after all the science is clear on what the body needs, we just need to know how to do that with a plant-based diet.

Who is Tom Bainbridge?

Tom is the head of education at the BTN Academy, teaching many of our theory and science-based modules. He plays an integral role as a nutrition and coaching mentor to 100s of budding and graduated nutrition coaches. Tom is also an ex recreational powerlifter with a keen eye for archery.

2.00-2.30pm - Lunch/snack/break

2.30-3.45pm - Maximising Hypertrophy and Strength with Joseph Agu (MSc)

Hypertrophy isn't just beneficial or desired for gym goers seeking a bigger physique, it's beneficial for athletes, every day and aging people, so understanding and maximising hypertrophy is a key skill. Certainly, calories and training are important, as is protein, but what are the details, what are the things we can fine tune to maximise our diet, training and supplement use? Joseph will use his years of working with elite athletes and obtaining research to explore every angle of hypertrophy and leave you with a blueprint on how to maximise muscle gains.

Who is Joseph Agu?

Joseph received his master’s degree in Sports Nutrition in 2011 from the University of Chester, before moving into elite sport. As a former Performance Nutritionist for the English Institute of Sport (EIS) and British Athletics, Joseph provided world-leading nutritional support to Britain’s best track and field athletes, leading to many medal wins in international competitions. In 2018, Joseph was appointed as Assistant Professor in Sport & Exercise Medicine at the University of Nottingham, where he is the convenor of the MSc Sports and Exercise Nutrition module.

4-4.15pm - Break with panel questions submitted

4.15-5.15pm – Sports Psychology with Will Hawkins (MSc)

What does it take to develop an unbeatable mindset? What traits do elite level athletes have and how can you cultivate the same potential within yourself and with clients. What tips and techniques can we use to develop a bullet-proof, high level mindset? Will blends the science with the application and delves into what makes the human brain tick and how we can leverage this to our advantage and create more success in our own and our client’s lives.

Who is Will Hawkins?

Will is a London based coach and qualified teacher with a BSc in Sports Science, a MSc in Sports Performance and Diploma in Motivation & Behaviour Change. Will prides himself on blending the fine art of eating, training and behaviour change to maximise his client’s results. Will also teaches many behaviour change and psychology modules on our BTN Academy courses.

5.15-5.45pm - Balancing a High-Performance Life with Ben Coomber (BSc, CISSN)

After all of the above talks, Ben Coomber will discuss how to balance it all with daily stressors, goals we have set for our business, family commitments, training commitments, clients and more. We now live in a busy world, it’s go, go, go, so balancing all of this without burning out can be a challenge. You will leave the conference having a plan and confidence in your ability to be at your best, in turn allowing you to get the best out of our clients.

5.45-6pm – Closing remarks and summary of the day with Ben Coomber
