Wednesday 29th Jan 1-2pm (building 54, room 4011) is the fourth session of our lunchtime career talks.

This weeks speaker is Stuart Penn from Framestore. He will give an insight into how Physics is used in Film, VR and Integrated Advertising.

About Stuart:

Stuart Penn has 20 years’ experience in visual effects. Prior to joining Framestore in 2000 he spent a decade as a research physicist, after earning his PhD at the University of Liverpool.

He has since worked across the pipeline at Framestore in various roles including Model, Lighting and Environment Supervisor. His credits include some of the biggest Hollywood productions of recent years; Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, James Cameron’s Avatar, Marvel's Iron Man 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Stuart was a key member of the team on Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar and BAFTA - winning Gravity, developing the techniques used to shoot zero gravity scenes, working with motion control robots and the innovative LED lighting stage (Lightbox). He was heavily involved in supervising the shoot. In 2017 Stuart worked as VFX Supervisor on Alien: Covenant, resurrecting cult creature ‘The Facehugger’ and used his expertise to supervise the filming of the film’s space walk sequence.

Stuart has worked on set as shoot supervisor on the BAFTA-nominated Paddington 2. Most recently he was a VFX Supervisor on The Aeronauts and on Marvel’s box office breaking Avengers: Endgame, developing a wide range of effects including Smart Hulk, Rocket, Quantum suits and numerous digital environments.
