Spotlight on sexual harassment and the #MeToo movement

About this Event

The SYLA is delighted to partner with the Scottish Discrimination Law Association (SDLA) to hear an expert panel on the topic of ‘Spotlight on sexual harassment’

This event will give you varying insights into the #MeToo movement from a panel of specialist lawyers practising in employment law.

We have three speakers on the panel:

1. Sarah Mennie – Sarah is the sexual harassment solicitor at the Scottish Women’s Rights Centre. Her service provides free legal information, advice and representation to women who have experienced sexual harassment at work, in further education, and online. Sarah also contributes to policy work and develops and delivers training on sexual harassment in different contexts. Prior to taking up this role Sarah worked as an Employment lawyer for several years, most recently with the Government Legal Department in London, where she focused on discrimination and harassment cases. Sarah also holds a Masters in International Human Rights Law; has worked at the United Nations Human Rights Council; and volunteered with Rape Crisis Scotland on their national helpline supporting survivors of sexual violence.

2. Marie McDonald - Marie was appointed Chairperson of Miller Samuel Hill Brown in January 2019. Marie has a wealth of experience and is a recognised leader in her field – having been accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a specialist in Employment Law since 2006. She has been awarded a Post Graduate Certificate with merit in Mediation and Dispute Resolution from the University of Strathclyde. She is also Co-Chair of the International Lawyers Network Labour and Employment Group and acts as Honorary Legal Counsel for Badminton Scotland.

3. Sarah Gilzean – Sarah is a Senior Associate in Morton Fraser’s highly rated Employment Law team. Sarah is an accredited specialist in employment law and has particular expertise in discrimination and equal pay. Sarah is highly regarded in the sector as a discrimination lawyer and is Convener of the Law Society Equalities Law Reform Committee and Secretary of the Scottish Discrimination Law Association. She regularly advises in relation to the full ambit of employment law issues. including discrimination, equal pay and industrial relations. She is also regularly asked to speak at conferences and training seminars on employment law and discrimination topics. Sarah is considered an Associate to Watch in Employment law by Chambers and Partners.

5.30 – 6pm: Registration and refreshments.

6 – 715pm: Hear from our expert panel.

7.15pm onwards: Networking and drinks

SDLA will be holding their AGM at 5.30pm before the main event starts and anyone with an interest in joining SDLA or getting involved in any way is very welcome to come along.
