Description

The Spotlight: Perspectives on Industrial Strategy seminar series brings in key thinkers from academic institutions and think tanks to 1 Victoria Street to talk about their work and how it relates to industrial strategy. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the latest thinking this agenda.

In this session, the renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato will discuss the need to take a 'mission-based' approach to Industrial Strategy and innovation policy. She will look at the dynamics of "mission-oriented" investments in the past (e.g. the Apollo mission), and then consider their application to tackle modern day missions - from battling climate change to developing a modern care system that addresses the needs of an ageing population. Finally, the presentation will argue for a market making and shaping framework for policy making, to complement the market fixing one.

Mariana Mazzucato is Professor in the Economics of Innovation & Public Value, University College London (UCL) and where she is establishing a new Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. She is author of the highly-acclaimed book The Entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths (Anthem 2013; Public Affairs, 2015) and winner of the 2014 New Statesman SPERI Prize in Political Economy and the 2015 Hans-Matthöfer-Preis. Mazzucato has advised policymakers around the world on how to deliver ‘smart’, inclusive and sustainable growth. In 2013 she was named as one of the '3 most important thinkers about innovation' in the New Republic.
