Spring 26: LST Spelling with your Ears - Spelling with your Eyes

By The Learning Support Team - Leicestershire Specialist Teaching Service

Overview

This course provides the information and resources required to unpick spelling errors and remediate spelling difficulties.

This is for Leicestershire LA schools and academies only

If you are an independent school and wish to access this training please contact LSSCoreOffer@leics.gov.uk

Despite access to well founded intervention (SSP), a number of our pupils continue to demonstrate bizarre and pre-phonetic spelling, and some can not get beyond phonetically plausible, yet inaccurate spelling.

This course focusses on developing knowledge, skills, and strategies to enable more effective spelling.

It investigates the part phonological and morphological awareness, and orthographic skills play in spelling, discusses how to assess and develop these skills and to apply them to spelling. Visual and multisensory strategies and overlearning are crucial, and the course looks at how these run together with processing sounds when spelling.

Resources provided include informal assessments and analysis for phonological awareness, spelling of regular and high frequency words, phonic knowledge and skills, as well as those to support the learning process.

Spelling support is best delivered 1:1 but can easily be adapted for a small group.

Depending on the ability of the learner to learn and apply the skills and knowledge taught, this is anticipated to be a short term intervention.

We look forward to working with you.
