Wait, who is Women Who Write?

We’re Women Who Write. We are a community of women and non-binary writers founded in early 2024, whose mission is to give writers the time, space and support they need to write. We run events throughout Scotland: check them out at womenwhowrite.com/calendar.

Who can take part in the challenge?

Accepted Answer

Any writer at any stage of the writing practice with a goal big or small, who identifies as a woman or non-binary. We are LGBTQIA-friendly and trans-inclusive and strive to create safe spaces and experiences for non-dominant gender identities to work on their writing projects and craft.

Question 3

Do I need to be based in Scotland to join the challenge?

Accepted Answer

No! Our in-person events are based in Edinburgh, but we always welcome writers from further afield. To help connect you with our community, we have a virtual kick-off event to help you set your goal and host at least one weekly virtual write-in as well.

Question 4

What does it cost to join the challenge?

Accepted Answer

We have four registration options. A no-cost fee for those who need it, no questions asked. A virtual-only tier for those based outside Scotland who will only be able to attend virtual write-ins. A £5 standard registration fee, and a pay-it-forward fee of £10 support our free challenge places.

Why is there a cost to join?

There’s a lot that goes into organising and setting up the challenge and events. So, this year, we’ve introduced a registration fee to cover software, admin, venue hire and administrative costs, to make sure we can bring you the most productive, fun challenge possible!

I can't afford the fee. Can I participate?

Accepted Answer

Of course! Just click the fee-free registration option. We are committed to keeping everything we host and organise as affordable as possible and always have free places for those who need it.

Question 7

Do I have to come to events?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. If you want to write at home or in your own time, please do. We arrange the events for those who like writing in company, but there’s no pressure to attend. This is your challenge time – use it as you like.

Question 8

Why 50 days?

Accepted Answer

We know that our writers have work, caring responsibilities, trips, and other lifestyle considerations that mean it’s not always realistic to achieve a goal in the month most challenges allow. We think 50 days is realistic and sustainable, and gives you time for a break if you need it.

Question 9

What goal should I set?

Accepted Answer

You can set any goal you like for the challenge – it doesn’t have to be a word count, and you’re welcome to set up to two. We’ll help you work out what is realistic and how you want to measure your progress at our goal-setting event.

Question 10

How will I track my progress?

Accepted Answer

We use Pacemaker Press, a flexible goal-tracking tool that allows you to log your progress and see how your fellow challenge participants are doing. We find that this kind of accountability helps keep us motivated, but don't stress if your writing isn't going to plan! We will help you get on track.

We run challenges twice a year: one in the spring, and one in the autumn called Fall into Winter. Check our our website, womenwhowrite.com, in October! In the meantime, follow our Instagram and Substack, or come along to one of our friendly, low-pressure events outside the challenge.
