Family Adventures! Forest School sessions are for children and their parent / carer who want to have fun outdoors in the woodlands while learning about nature, being adventurous, meeting like-minded families and playmates, playing outdoor games, sharing tall tales, making woodland crafts, keeping alive traditional skills, bushcraft and country knowledge and enjoying food and drink around a campfire. Children will learn about the outdoors, develop their confidence, physical, mental, social, co-operative and goal seeking skills. They will learn life skills to keep themselves safe and resilient.
The sessions are led by a fully qualified, insured and licensed Forest School Leader and will be themed upon seasonal changes. They follow the Forest School Association Quality Framework. They will vary according to the weather and participant needs and development. We have a focussed beginning and end of the session around the campfire, some optional suggested activities / games / skills each week which you can join in with if you wish, and each session includes a healthy snack (usually a flapjack), choice of water / hot chocolate / tea / coffee. We welcome children and parents/ carers of all ages and backgrounds. We have (and cater for with baby rugs and natural wooden toys and objects) had young babies and parents / carers who like to spend time in the outdoors and meet like minded familes - the adults in this case like to take part in the crafts or skills while chatting around the campfire while their babies play or sleep. We have pre-school and primary age children, and we have a range of activities they can take part in if they choose which can be scaled up or down to the appropriate level. We welcome home-schooled children and those with additional needs. Our strength is in our inclusion. There is scope, within available resources, skills levels and time available, to develop your own project / skill over the weeks if you wish, please discuss what you would like to do and we may be able to support you with tools and resources. This might include fire skills, tool skills, natural art or crafts. However, please be aware that this is a group meet rather than individual tuition, and the leader's guidance time will be limited. Brightwood Training offers separate specific skill courses for those who wish to be tutored in a particular skill. You and your child do not need to 'join in' or 'complete' any activity, the focus is on meeting as a group with resources of tools and some optional activities within the woodland setting. We aim to relax, have fun, absorb the outdoors and have the enjoyment of learning some skills and knowledge along the way.
In the event of rain, we have a parachute shelter and tarpaulins - it's exciting in the rain and a great place for learning! We run in all weathers, and will only cancel if there are dangerous high winds, flooding or snow and the site is inaccesible. If we cancel we will refund your session cost or arrange an alternative session.
What Should I Bring / Wear?
Please wear clothes suitable for the weather, it may be colder than you think. No sandals or shorts due to insect bites and nettles. Please wear sturdy shoes, boots or wellingtons; long trousers and long sleeved tops even in summer. A sun hat or woolly hat if the weather is cold, and gloves. Waterproof top and trousers are recommended (dungaree style waterproofs for small children are useful then they can play in the mud and water kitchen freely). You will normally need a warm jumper as it can be windy and cool up on the ridgeway, even in summer. It is the UK after all! Insect repellent and your own bottle of water may be useful on hot days. We always carry a first aid kit and the Leader is first aid trained.
Please note there are no toilets on site - wild wees are the option. There are toilets at the Stable Yard in Coleshill.
By booking your place you agree that you have read and agree to abide by our cancellation policy on our website www.brightwoodtraining.com. Fees are paid termly and are non -refundable.
If you would like to try out the sessions, we have school holiday sessions, please see eventbrite Brightwood Training events or the website www.brightwoodtraining.com
