Spring Workshop: Sun Hive Workshop
Mon, 17 Apr 2017, 14:00 – Wed, 19 Apr 2017, 14:00 BST
Ahead of our ‘Day of the Bee’ on Saturday 22 April, we are offering the opprunity to attend a Sun Hive workshop.
The Sun Hive (Weissenseifener Haengekorb) is a key element of the Natural Beekeeping Trust's commitment to bee guardianship. Based on the principles of bee-centred apiculture, the Sun Hive is an ideal conservation hive for our pollinating friends the honeybee. Although one may be favoured with some surplus honey from time to time, honey 'production' is not the main purpose of the hive.
This workshop run by The Natural Been Keeping Trust is open to experienced beekeepers and beginners, it will take place over three days and involve weaving the straw skep baskets, which are built to precise measurements. The Sun Hive is intended to be installed at a height of at least 2.5 metres (8 feet). The bees are thus in their aerial realm and fly above the heads of passing onlookers. The shape of the hive harmonises with the movement gesture of the bee colony and enables the bees to design their brood nests according to their own innate criteria.
The hive was designed by German sculptor, Guenther Mancke, and represents the fruits of many years of research into the nature of the honeybee colony.
The hive is made from a source of biodynamic or organic rye straw, hand harvested and cleaned, and each participant will need access to a set of wooden hive moulds for weaving the skeps. The rye straw and moulds will be provided.
Day One: Monday, 2 pm – 6 pm
Day two: Tuesday 8 am – 12.30 and 1.20 – 6 pm
Dat three: Wednesday 8 am – 12.30 for lunch and discussion. Workshop finishes at 2 pm.
The courses are led by Rachel Hanney, whose tutorial skills are unsurpassed and whose passion for the hive has inspired numerous beekeepers, who have joined our workshops from all over the world.
You should wear comfortable shoes, as the workshop will involve lots of standing and layered clothing. You may wish to bring gardening gloves.
