Understanding HIV and AIDS- accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)
The PDA in HIV at SCQF level 7 is ideal for anyone who works in healthcare, social care, sexual health, or HIV. The course is also relevant to anyone who supports at-risk populations or high prevalence communities. This course is designed to extend or broaden professional or vocational skills and are linked to National Occupational Standards for Learning and Development.
These PDAs are newly launched in 2017 and we are the first centre to be approved to offer them.
This qualification is comprised of two units:
Unit 1 – HIV: An Introduction (6th February 2017)
Unit 2 – HIV: Treatment & Lifestyle Management (27th February 2017)

Unit 1 – HIV: An Introduction
This unit is designed to enable learners to develop knowledge and understanding of HIV infection. It will give learners an understanding of how the virus is transmitted, the hierarchy of risks associated with the transmission of HIV Infection and the various prevention methods. The unit will also help learners to understand the myths, stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with HIV.
Unit 2 – HIV: Treatment & Lifestyle Management
This Unit will provide learners with knowledge and understanding of testing, diagnosis, treatment and lifestyle management strategies, both medical and personal, for those living with HIV. This includes current research in relation to treatment methods. We will examine HIV monitoring techniques, current developments in HIV cure & vaccine research and the impact of new treatments. The Unit also offers the learner the opportunity to compare how HIV is treated in countries beyond the UK and understand the role of legislation, campaigning, lobbying, policies and practices.
Each units is comprised of one full day of training as well as a take-home assignment.
Learners may wish to undertake this Unit and/or the Group Award as a means of seeking further progression within their workplace or as a means of progressing to higher level study.
