The SRA Handbook is being replaced by a new series of Standards and Regulations (STaR). It is crucial that all lawyers understand what is changing and to effectively prepare for the new regulatory regime.

This course is aimed at all law firms (and those working with them). The content of the course is relevant to all managers, principals and lawyers wishing to improve their understanding of the SRA Standards and Regulations.

Course Notes

Crispin Passmore, Founder, Passmore Consulting

Crispin runs a new consultancy focused on helping legal businesses and regulators adapt to and take advantage of the changing global legal market. He has a select group of clients mixing one off projects and ongoing retained advice and support. They range from US and global business through major UK legal service providers and to start-ups seeking to break into the legal market.

Prior to this, until December 2018, Crispin was Executive Director at the Solicitors Regulation Authority where he designed and led the major reforms to the legal market including allowing MDPs, reform of separate business, SQE and the new Standards & Regulation that take affect this year. He also oversaw the SRA’s supervision and investigations functions during his final year at the SRA.

Previously Crispin helped set up the Legal Services Board, was Executive Director in legal aid. He started his legal market career in the voluntary sector as a volunteer in the Citizens Advice Bureau during his degree and moving through that sector to be CEO of Coventry Law Centre - the UK’s largest Law Centre.

Chris Handford, Director of Regulatory Policy, SRA

Chris Handford is Director of Regulatory Policy at the Solicitors Regulation Authority, having joined the organisation in 2015. He has nearly 20 years’ experience developing policy in the legal service sector and was previously Head of Research and Development at the Legal Services Board, the oversight regulator for legal service in England and Wales. Chris's primary responsibility at the SRA is to deliver a reform programme designed to enable growth and innovation in the market and to strike the right balance between reducing regulatory burdens and ensuring consumer protection.

David Gilmore, Director, DG Legal

David has provided advice and assistance to hundreds of law firms and other legal organisations. He delivers specialist consultancy and training on a wide range of topics including business management & strategy, tendering, compliance and quality assurance.

David also founded and regularly contributes to LegalVoice, a not-for-profit online magazine for legal professionals. Prior to establishing DG Legal, David worked for Abbey, Marks & Spencer and the Legal Services Commission in varying senior management roles. In 2016 David was appointed as a Commissioner advising Lord Bach on policy relating to Justice and Legal Aid.

Sarah Charlton, Consultant, ILFM & DG Legal

Sarah has worked in the Legal Accounting field for nearly 30 years, having been a member of the ILFM throughout her career. Sarah qualified as a Fellow member of the ILFM in 2005, winning the ‘Wilfred Owen’ award or her dissertation on ‘Practice Management within a Law Firm’.

Sarah has worked for both small and medium size law firms fulfilling a variety of roles in Practice Management and Financial Compliance.

Matt Howgate, Consultant, DG Legal

Matthew is a non-practising solicitor and was formerly Senior Legal Adviser and Head of Continuous Improvement at the Legal Services Commission. He was also Legal Standards Principal at the Co-operative Legal Services.

Since 2008 he has been providing expert organisational development, compliance and strategy consultancy. He has particular expertise in SRA and BSB compliance issues, data protection (and GDPR) compliance and is recognised as a leading expert on the legal aid scheme (indeed he is a member of the managing committee at the Legal Aid Practitioner’s Group).
