St Bonaventure's 140th Anniversary Mass & Reception
Mon 17 July 2017, 13:30 – 17:30 BST
In 1877 the Order of Friars Minor started teaching boys in Stratford in the basement of the Church of St Francis of Assisi.
Due to the generosity and patronage of Cardinal Manning, the 2nd Archbishop of Westminster they were able to move to Forest Gate and built our school together with the Catholic Church of St Antony of Padua, the largest in East London and the Friary, the envy of Europe.
Since then countless Staff and Students have passed through this great school. Known affectionately by all as simply "St Bon's", there isn't a school in the state sector that has produced as many young men that have made such an impact upon the history of Great Britain. Engineers, war heroes, sporting stars, scientists, academics, great citizens, actors, film directors; all have been educated in the school and more importantly, have learned to uphold the Gospel values that mean that their influence in the world, is a positive one.
To honour all those that have contributed to the history of the school and to pray for a continuing success we are celebrating the 140th Anniversary with a Mass and a Reception. The Mass will be held in the Church of St Antony of Padua, also founded by the Franciscans and always closely associated with St Bonaventure's. The Reception will be held following the Mass on the Friary Lawn.
We are very lucky that the Mass will be celebrated by the Bishop of Brentwood with many Priests concelebrating, including the Vicar General Monsignor Kevin Hale, Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham Monsignor John Armitage and the Dean of Newham Reverand Bob Hamill.
We anticipate a great demand for this event and as so we need to limit the number of available tickets.
Some Friends of St Bonanventure's will be sent an invitation in the post and this will give them access to the Church, the Mass and the Reception.
If you have not kept in touch with the school and want to be involved, please apply for a ticket. Numbers are limited, so please do not wait.
We all look forward to being able to celebrate with you on Monday 17th July 2017.
