Event Details

The next meeting of the young onset dementia support group at St George's Hospital will take place on Monday, 28th November 2016 in the John Parker Lecture Theatre, Atkinson Morley Wing. The meeting will start at 7.30pm, although, as always, people are encouraged to arrive any time after 7pm for refreshments and conversation.

We will be joined for the evening by John Ramsay who is Director of a company called Shift 8 Ltd. John will be demonstrating a new innovation from Holland called Tovertafel that projects images, words and games onto a table top, to prompt enjoyment and interaction for people with dementia, families and carers.

John has family experience of dementia. His father was diagnosed with dementia (20 years ago) aged 52. John was only 12 years old at the time. John trained as a corporate lawyer but gave up this profession last year in order to bring Tovertafel to the UK to bring entertainment and laughter to people living with dementia.

John will set up the Tovertafel system in the John Parker Lecture Theatre and, after a short presentation, people will be able to play the games and enjoy the experience of this inspired product.

After the refreshment break, discussions in the adjoining seminar room will include:

  • Nikki Zimmermann from the Alzheimer's Society would like to engage people in a discussion about the Alzheimer's Society's young onset dementia service she is leading in London, and, in particular, she would like to hear about people's experiences at the Cognitive Neurology Service at St George's Hospital.
  • Mike Parish has volunteered to feed back on his and Tom's experience of speech and language therapy for Tom, which Mike arranged after the last young onset dementia support group meeting.
  • The Government has just launched a new 'listening programme' for people with dementia and carers:  https://www.gov.uk/government/news/listening-to-people-with-dementia-and-their-carers

Looking forward to seeing you on 28th November 2016. The St George's Hospital young onset dementia group is open to anyone diagnosed with dementia at a young age (under 65) and their families. Please do extend an invitation to the meeting to patients and carers you are in touch with who might benefit.

For your calendar, the next two meetings have been scheduled for 25th January 2017 and 15th February 2017.
