An Inaugural Public Engagement Lecture with Vivienne Parry, OBE

22nd July from 6-7pm

Vivienne Parry hosts medical and scientific programmes for BBC Radio 4, writes widely on health and is a former presenter of Tomorrow's World. She is the author of The Truth about Hormones and serves as Head of Engagement at Genomics England.

She will be discussing her adventures in public engagement, why ‘with’ is the word of the moment and how the new UKRI Public Engagement strategy marks a watershed in the relationship between research and society.

Biography

Vivienne is a writer and broadcaster. A scientist by training, she has presented BBC TV’s iconic science series Tomorrow’s World, made hundreds of programmes on science and health for BBC radio, been a columnist for the Times, Guardian and the News of the World and even an agony aunt for Good Housekeeping. Today she has a part time role as Head of Engagement at Genomics England which is delivering the 100,000 Genomes Project, facilitates major events all over the world such as the G8 Dementia Summit and sits on the board of UKRI, the body responsible for the strategic spend of the UK’s £7 billion research and innovation budget. Her particular brief on the UKRI Board is public engagement. She is chair of the Cheltenham Science Festival and was awarded an OBE for services to the public understanding of science in 2011.
