"We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars".

Just one of the many celebrated aperçus produced by nineteenth-century wit, social observer and gay icon Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, the man who delighted, scandalised and mesmerised late-nineteenth century London.

How better to celebrate World Book Day than with a walk around St James’s – the masculine quarter of fashionable London where Oscar spent too much on cigars, sat down to write ‘An Ideal Husband’ in a private hotel and exulted on the glittering first night of his hit play, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, subtitled ‘A Trivial Comedy for Serious People’, which premiered at the St James’s Theatre in 1895.

Discover the extraordinary story of Oscar’s life and times, from his role as champion of the Aesthetic Movement to his infatuation with Lord Alfred Douglas and the queer underworld of Victorian London, which ultimately resulted in his sensational trial, criminal conviction, imprisonment and early death.

Our guide, Simon Whitehouse will lead you on this guided walk around St James's. bbgsimon@gmail.com
