About this Event

This International Academic Conference marks the 10th anniversary of John Henry Newman's beatification and the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to St Mary's College, Oscott, Birmingham, UK.

It will focus on aspects of Newman's theology which relate to the development of contemporary Catholic theology. This includes an examination of Newman's influence on the theology that emerged at the Second Vatican Council and afterwards. It will make particular reference to his interpretation of history and culture and his theological reception by scholars such as Francis Davis and Joseph Ratzinger. With panel discussions, the Conference will also be an opportunity to consider how Newman's theology of development can be applied to theological challenges today.

Speakers and topics include:

  • Prof Terrence Merrigan (KU, Leuven) "Newman and Vatican II."
  • Prof Judith Champ (St Mary's College, Oscott, Birmingham): "Newman and his reception in the work of Francis H Davis."
  • Dr Andrew Meszaros (St Patrick's College, Maynooth)“Newman, Contemporary Theology and the Signs of the Times.”
  • Dr Mary McCaughey (St Mary's College, Oscott, Birmingham) "Newman and Ratzinger on Theology, History and Hermeneutics."
  • Dr Jacob Phillips (St Mary's University, London). "Newman and Contemporary issues in Catholic Theologies of Culture."
  • Rev Dr Stephen Morgan (University of St Joseph, Macau) "Newman, The Essay on Development and three contemporary challenges.”

The conference is a one day event held at Oscott College on Saturday March 6th beginning at 9.15am and concluding at 6pm. The price of £60 includes access to all lectures and discussions, lunch and coffee breaks. Accommodation is not included.
