Event description
In anticipation of the final Visual Communion Symposium, A+C are hosting a number of short tours and celebrations of the Eucharist.

About this Event

Please join us for a tour and Eucharist at St John the Baptist Church, Holland Road

Thursday 28 Nov, 5pm ticketed tour followed by 6.30pm un-ticketed Said Eucharist. Celebrant: The Rt Revd David Standcliffe. The church will be open all day for visitors to view its extensive collection of church plate and vestments.

Surrounded by Victorian terraces this dramatic and inspiring Grade I-listed church is a masterpiece by James Brooks (1825-1901). Developed incrementally from 1885 to 1916, each stage of its design charts how theology found expression in increasingly elaborate architecture and craftwork that reflected and enhanced liturgical rituals. On the tour we will discover the choir stalls hand-carved by Miss Spencer, the vicar's daughter; the reredos of Our Lady holding a small model of St John's; and ornate vestments dissaproved of by the Anglican church in the early 19th Century which were protected by the clergy who claimed they were personal possessions.
