Event description
In anticipation of the final Visual Communion Symposium, A+C are hosting a number of short tours and celebrations of the Eucharist.

About this Event

Please join us for a tour and Eucharist at St Laurence's Church (followed by an optional visit to St Saviour's Eltham)

Wednesday 27 November. 10:30am un-ticketed Low Mass followed by a ticketed tour. St Laurence's Church, Bromley Road, Catford, London SE6. Celebrant: Revd Canon Charles Pickstone.

St Laurence Church is a magnificent example of the best of 1960s liturgical architecture, a beautiful octagonal, light-filled space. Seven spans of dalles de verre glazing at clerestory level are supported by slender concrete mullions. When first built in 1968, it was known as ‘the space-age church’ (the Lady Chapel spire is not unlike a space rocket). Its adjoining large community centre, represents a classic 1960s view of the relationship of church and community and its visual focus on the altar table is augmented by a recent circular artwork by Victoria Rance.

Additionally, after the tour of St Laurence's, there will be an optional visit to St Saviour's Eltham (probably by bus) where we will see the first of Nugent Cachemaille-Day's London churches completed in 1933. Here the muscular exterior architecture (reflecting the architect's interest in German and Scandinavian design) belies a beautifully poised interior with a traditional liturgical layout centered on the Eucharist.
