Event description

About this Event

For a small island, it has a big history - as well as an exciting future - so the opportunity to set foot on Drake’s Island as part of the first organised public tours for 30 years will be a unique experience.

Due to huge public demand, we now have two dates available to visit this iconic landmark, by kind permission of the island's new owner, Morgan Phillips; Sunday 15 March and Wednesday 13 May, both with 105 spaces each. Each ticket sold will go towards helping St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. St Luke’s provides care for 50% of deaths in our area, 50% of which are at home, enabling patients to live well to the end of their lives.

During the tour you will see Plymouth from an entirely new perspective and enjoy 360-degree views of the Hoe, Waterfront, Bovisand, Mount Edgcumbe and Mount Wise. You will also hear the island's fascinating story as told by the islands’ gatekeeper and avid historian Bob King - from its emergence as a prehistoric island to the fortress it became.

You will be guided through the historic gun casements, Governor's House, barracks, ablution blocks and explore the hidden tunnels. Drake's Island is also a haven for nature and is frequently visited by some more unusual birdlife.

Transportation will be by boat leaving from the Mount Batten Ferry pontoon.

Are reasonably fit as there are steep steps and some rugged terrain on the island. We regret that currently there is no disabled access. Please wear suitable walking shoes and bring warm and waterproof clothing. We hope the weather will be favourable but be prepared.

Please leave plenty of time to park or arrive by public transport. There is free parking on Lawrence Road, on the right before you reach the Hotel Mount Batten.

Please follow the orange signs and look for the St Luke’s flag by the pontoon near the Hotel Mount Batten. Please arrive at the pontoon a minimum of 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Hotel Mount Batten is found on Lawrence Road, Mount Batten, Plymouth, PL9 9SJ.

Please pay attention to any briefings given on the boat and on the island, these are primarily for your safety, but also your comfort.

Unfortunately, if you are late and miss your departure, we may not be able to offer you an alternative tour time as these may be full. We do expect this event to sell out. However, we will do our best to accommodate you should a place become available.

Dogs and pets are not permitted on the island.

Refund Policy

If the tour is cancelled due to bad weather, or other issues beyond our control, an alternative date will be offered.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer refunds due to the limited places available and our operational overheads. The money will be treated as a general donation.
