****** Tickets to go on sale in early March - reserve your place today ******

The St Matthew Passion – J S Bach depicts the final events leading to Christ’s death and resurrection. Birmingham Cathedral will be interpreting Bach’s work by performing the 1727 masterpiece in a unique performance Saturday 1st April at 5pm. It’s hailed as some of the greatest music ever written!

It tells the story of Christ’s final days through the eyes of Matthew the Evangelist. Both heart-wrenching and full of hope, contemplative and celebratory, this Holy Week performance of his enduring music is the perfect Easter concert. It will be performed at the start of Passiontide.

The performance is unique for many reasons:

- It will be sung in English not German (this means the audience will follow the story) It’s rarely performed in English anywhere in the UK

- It will be performed in a Baroque church built in Bach's lifetime, not a concert/ symphony hall

- It will be performed by two cathedral choirs (St Philip’s and St Chad’s) rather than a choral society and will include the Boy Choristers of St Philip’s

- Top orchestra led by Martin Hughes

- Top soloists with Robert Jenkins (Evangelist), Louise Wayman (soprano) and Ali Donaghue (bass)

- Lastly, this will be the largest and last major concert directed by Canon Marcus Huxley Director of Music at Birmingham Cathedral. He will be retiring in the summer after 31 years’ service
