Matthew O’Keeffe, Conductor

St Michael’s Festival Chorus

Brixton Chamber Orchestra

BCO returns to the St Michael's Arts Festival once again with a performance of Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor and Reinecke's Flute Concerto.

The Brixton Chamber Orchestra gave their first ever concert at St Michael’s Church in May 2016, and The Arts Festival has become one of our biggest platforms. We'll be joined by a glittering line-up of outstanding young singers selected by Matthew O'Keeffe, MD. This year sees the first outing of the St Michael’s Festival Chorus! A collection of talented amateur singers from all over South London will come together to rehearse and perform Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor, both heavenly and fiery in equal measure. Left unfinished by Mozart, the work - just like this concert - will leave you begging for more!

We regret that, though we were to be joined by Stockwell resident and titanic flautist, William Bennett, he has unfortunately had to withdraw. His star pupil, Alena Walentine, will step in to perform Reinecke's deeply expressive and virtuosic Flute Concerto. William will attend the Concert and give a short introduction.

Alena is an Altus Artist and Vice-Chair of the British Flute Society. She is a recipient of numerous prizes and awards at some of the worlds finest international competitions. Alena has played at the most prestigious UK venues and has given solo recitals in over 25 countries! Her orchestral work is prolific, appearing as a guest principal flute with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Opera North, the Philharmonia, Hallé, Britten Sinfonia, London Mozart Players, MusicAeterna, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Alena is also a very enthusiastic teacher and teaches at the Junior Royal Academy of Music, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and City, University of London. She has also given masterclasses at many courses and festivals, including William Bennett’s own International Flute Summer School.

The cost of a ticket is £20 each, or £10 for students or schoolchildren. Tickets for the latter are only availble through the Festival website: www.stmaf.org
