Description

Reformation 500 Lates at St Paul's Cathedral

Join us at two atmospheric late openings of St Paul's for Reformation 500

The vast Gothic Cathedral that saw the Reformation of the 16th century was to meet its end in the Great Fire of 1666. The new Cathedral which we know today became the first post-Reformation Cathedral built in England and bears many of the architectural and design hallmarks of this new era.

To mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, special late openings will be held on two evenings in October.

  • Hear about the Reformation in words and music in the Cathedral's quire, led by St Paul's clergy and musicians.

  • See a rare copy of William Tyndale's New Testament - the 'most dangerous' book in Tudor England - on display for the first time ever

  • Sketch some of Wren's exquisite Reformation architecture - pencils and paper provided

  • Photograph the interior of one of the world's most famous churches

  • See Sir James Thornhill's muted post-Reformation dome paintings from the Whispering Gallery

Explore the vast Cathedral Floor and Crypt and marvel at the exquisite architecture and intricate Victorian mosaics, see where some of the nation’s most famous heroes and artists are buried and simply take-in the breathtaking calm of St Paul's.

For these special evenings, as well as allowing photography we will be actively encouraging people to sketch some of the Cathedral's details. Pencils and paper will be available on the evening - but of course you can bring your own. There will also be the opportunity to have your sketches photographed and featured on the Cathedral's digital channels.

For those Londoners who relish the opportunity to be tourists in their own city, touch screen multimedia guides packed with pictures, commentary and archive footage are included in nine languages.

For our younger visitors there are also four family trails packed with fun facts and opportunities to find things, write creatively and draw pictures.

Throughout the evenings, drinks and light food will be available in the crypt cafe and the Cathedral shop will be open, offering a range of gifts and mementos.

St Paul's Cathedral Lates doors open at 6.30pm. Last admission is 8.15pm and the cathedral will close for visiting at 9pm. The Whispering Gallery is included for these Reformation 500 Lates but due to vital maintenance the external Stone and Golden Galleries will not be open during the Lates.
