An educational and compassionate workshop helping staff better understand bereavement, how it may impact students, and how to offer support.

About this event

This training is for anyone that works with university students, either in a pastoral role or as a tutor, lecturer, administrator etc. It aims to open up difficult conversations and build confidence in providing support before signposting to further services if needed.

Staff will gain an understanding of bereavement based on real students' experiences - the emotional, physical and practical ways it can impact someone; the specific issues faced at university; and how best to help those who are struggling.

We combine an educational and compassionate approach, giving space for participants to learn but also to reflect and to share. The number of participants in each session is limited to allow for this, but there is never any pressure to talk if you’d rather just listen.

The first part of the training will be sent out as a video resource beforehand to ensure staff get as much as possible from the live event. Follow up resources will also be sent out afterwards so that there is something to refer back to when supporting and signposting students.

Individuals from any university can book onto this session, which is held online over Zoom. If you have any questions, or if you are interested in organising a session for a group of staff at a discounted rate, please email us at

"The Student Grief Network Awareness Training is an invaluable learning tool for universities. It is based on real life experiences of students and what they have said helps them. The training enables staff to begin to know what is useful in coming alongside students in grief and also for staff to share any challenges they are facing and feel supported through a very tricky topic. This Awareness Training is unique and is a huge asset to both staff and students."

- Jenni Thomas, OBE. Founder, Child Bereavement UK.

“I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the training. I know the word enjoyed probably sounds inappropriate but it was very informative and thought-provoking and very well delivered"

"Anna's knowledge and personal experiences created a unique and valuable opportunity for us to learn more about supporting students experiencing grief and supporting each other as a team. Anna created a space where we felt safe to open up about our own experiences, without pressure to do so, and empowered us to ask questions and contribute to discussions, helping us grow and learn together."
