We warmly invite you to attend our free Teachmeet event to share new ideas for development. This informal gathering is for librarians and library staff who are curious about what the future may hold. We require participants who are prepared to: think creatively, discuss enthusiastically and leave inspired. We'd also love to have some activity-based elements, with plenty of interaction.
This event is sponsored by the CILIP Information Literacy Group.
What is the theme?
The theme is 'Information Literacy and Making Judgements: from Brexit to The White House'. We believe library and information professionals should make a significant contribution to addressing concerns about fake news, 'alternative facts' and echo chambers. We invite attendees to share their experiences of teaching, promoting and practicing Information Literacy at a challenging time for traditional media, reporting and information sharing.
We hope you can relay your experiences and ask questions, such as how people make voting judgements in events such as Brexit and The US election - and how that relates to your profession.
Anyone can share great ideas they've used in their library, ask important questions or simply sign up to take part in learning conversations. We hope to inspire debate, innovation and participation.
How does it work?
We would like attendees to consider delivering something of their choosing related to the theme. We encourage participatory activities, as feedback from previous events mentions interaction, sharing ideas and networking as being of great benefit to participants. Your 'bit' can be up to 10 minutes long. The number of presenters / event leaders will be limited, so please get your application in early if you would like to do this. We also want an audience who are happy to discuss, share ideas and develop learning opportunities.
When is it?
1pm – 4.00pm on Thursday 4th May 2017. We will start the event with a free lunch at 1pm, so no need to bring your own or stock up with snacks. Hot refreshments will also be available from the cafe thruoghout the afternoon. We will be offering free water or juice to accompany lunch. Please notify us of any dietary needs.
Where is it?
The room is our 'Digital Classrom' which is T101 in the Beacon Building. Go out of the main train station exit, turn left and then turn right onto College Road. The shiny silver building is our new Beacon Building. A mere 5 minute walk from Stoke-on-Trent train station. As our university has a green travel policy, we recommend you use public transport to visit us. There is parking at the train station. Please let us know if you have any specific access requirements.
Can I just come along and not present?
Of course! It wouldn't work without some enthusiastic audience members, so feel free to come along but you will be asked to join in discussions and share your ideas and experiences. Just remember to book your place as numbers are limited.
