Event description
Stairwell’s very own Jolabokaflod: Meet authors, enjoy readings and a glass of cheer, gather books for the holidays

About this event

In Iceland, the best holiday gift is a book, and every year, books are bought in anticipation between late September and early November: the annual Jolabokaflod, or “Christmas book flood”. But like so much else the past year or two, our hope of taking part in a York version of this tradition has been delayed.

Stairwell Books, York’s home-grown publishing house, has been releasing wonderful books the past two years but, like all of us, have not been able to bring the books and our authors to the public. Zoom has been fab, but nothing quite matches actual, in-person human interaction.

Please join us for a one-night Jolabokaflod of our great books of 2020/2021, and to share a glass of juice or wine with our local York authors too. We can all enjoy a flood of words, not water! We’ll have a few readings from authors scattered throughout the event, books available at launch-type prices, and a cheerful, festive atmosphere.

We offer the best in York and Yorkshire writing: fiction, poetry, children’s books, and social history. Some come from farther afield too. Our authors are recognised by The Forward Prize, Best British Short Stories, and The Poetry Book Awards. Fantasy book The Return of The Mantra by Susie Williamson, won Firebird LGBT Young Adult book of 2021.

Recent books include Shadow Cat Summer, by Rebecca Smith (Jane Austen Writer’s Club, The Ash Museum); A Business of Ferrets, by Alwyn Bathan; The Warder, by Susie Williamson; Unknown, by Anna Rose James and Elizabeth Chadwick Pywell; The Great Billy Butlin Race, by Robin Richards, and children’s picture book, Harriet the Elephotamus, written by Fiona Kirkman and illustrated by Dawn (Mouse Pirate) Treacher.

We’ll have many authors on hand for you to chat with; all of our books will be available at huge holiday discounts. Come join us to celebrate the coming holidays, to celebrate ourselves, and to gather books for the coming winter.
