Event Details

Sean Bw Parker gives an in-depth analysis of the speech condition of stammering or stuttering from a first-hand point of view, dealing upfront with its causes, effects, and cultural context, with a view to better understanding of the condition itself.

The evening is an extended version of the TED talk given at Kadir Has University in Istanbul in 2013, with added glitz, humour, and audience Q&A throughout!

Sean Bw Parker is a writer, musician, artist and public speaker. With the bands Scorpio Rising, SPB, solo and through his collaborations with experimental musician Ettuspadix, Parker has released ten albums and numerous by others on his own Seraglio Point Productions label, since 2010.

"Wonderful...the songs are as heartfelt as they are intelligent' - Alain de Botton

"'Whose' is my fave. I dug 'above the war zone' too. I also think you've got your own 'voice' - although the spirit of Lou looms nearby (that's a compliment)" - Richard J Parfitt (60 ft Dolls)

"Cool" - Tim Burgess (The Charlatans)

"Really Velvet Undergroundy, especially on 'Whose', which I think is my favourite'" - Martin Carr (The Boo Radleys)

He lived in Istanbul for ten years until 2014, where he presented a TED talk at Istanbul's Kadir Has University titled 'Stammering and Creativity', one of the most watched internet videos on the subject. Parker is a prolific writer, having published five books and with work appearing in Time Out Istanbul, Cosmopolitan (in interview), NME.com, USA Today, Multicultural Guide, Louder Than War and regularly for Getintothis, amongst others.

2017 - The Cougar & The Silver Fox

2017 - Swimming Uphill: Absurd Theories

2016 - Devils of Bognor

2015 - Genuflecting Before the Pork-Barrel Demagogues

2014 - Salt in the Milk - Ten Years in Istanbul

He has made over 150 stage performances, been played on BBC Radio, is listed on IMDb, founded and ran the SeaFish venue and restaurant in Bognor Regis (2016), appeared in 5 short films and been featured on radio and television a number of times. He has organised three festivals, performed with Ed Harcourt, The Membranes and Turkish art rock band Replikas, as well as working with many others including Eat Static, Dodgy, Mark Morriss (The Bluetones), Deborah Rose, The Members, David Devant and His Spirit Wife, Atilla the Stockbroker, Duncan Disorderly & The Scallywags and Stage Van H.

Sean will be joined by poet Anthony Fairweather. Anthony was one of the first ever performers at The Art House, and we were the site of one of his first ever poetry performances - so he truly is one of the family here. Since then he has performed on TV, radio and comedy events around the world and has won various poetry awards at Hammer and Tongue and Purbeck Arts Festival Poetry Slam. As always, he will have you crying and, at the same time, rolling in the aisles!

Our Director Paul Bickmore (better known as Bik) spends a lot of his time tracking down a varied, interesting range of performances for us to host here at The Art House.

A seasoned musician himself (as well as being the man who does the sound engineering on the night - something he does extremely well), Bik hand-selects the very best acts to showcase in our gallery space - his criteria?

Travel information:-

We are a city centre venue and parking can be in short supply.  If you are driving, please make sure you leave plenty of time to find a space click here for a map of where the nearest parking spaces can be found.

We recommend Kings Park Road car park:
We are about 10 minutes walk from Southampton City Centre train station (head up the hill toward the Guildhall clock tower) and on the route for most city centre buses (the Unilink U1 stops virtually outside.)

 Accessibility info:-

Events are generally suitable for adults, young people and older children - children must be accompanied by an adult at all times, however. Young children are also welcome to come along but be aware some poems and songs may contain adult content (although we try to keep these until after children have left!)

Most events are held on our first floor, accessible by a wide staircase with a sturdy banner. Comformatable seating is provided.  We regret that, due to space and other constraints, we are generally unable to relocate our events to the ground floor for those who require ground level access - so sorry.
