Today we discover one of Britain's most renowned 20th century painters, Sir Stanley Spencer R.A.
In his beloved home village of Cookham, we visit the world’s largest displayed collection of paintings in the Stanley Spencer Gallery with a walk around Cookham, following in the footsteps of this very individual genius to see first hand the places that inspired him, where he painted many of his finest works.
Situated on the River Thames, Cookham was Spencer's "Holy Suburb", his "Village in Heaven", and numerous of his paintings were set in and around Cookham.
We will be taken by an expert Custodian around the heart of the village and to the river path, where you will see the settings of many of Spencer's most famous works.
The guide will provide illuminating information and will carry a large display file so we can appreciate the comparison between the scene today and the version that Spencer painted.
The Gallery has wheelchair access and a lift to the mezzanine floor. There is also a hearing loop.
