Welcome to Start that Novel!
The beginning of a novel may be the most important thing you ever write. It's the first impression you offer to your readers - a kind of mini-pitch for the story as a whole. In this workshop, we'll look at all the key elements that make for a great opening, as well as practical tips for how to develop a story idea, from the initial concept to a coherent first act.
Topics covered will include:
- Questions to answer before you start writing
- First lines, first paragraphs, first chapters
- Setting up plot and characters
- Narrative hooks and inciting incidents
- Troubleshooting the first act
The session is suitable for anyone who is currently starting a novel, thinking about starting a novel, or looking to edit or strengthen their existing material. It would also be great for anyone wanting to participate in this year's Novel Slam, or similar events, as it will provide all the tools you need to make your opening extract as punchy and compelling as possible!
