This interactive session will introduce you to the essentials of setting up and funding a social business that will benefit the community.
Starting from the social problem you want to address, communicating your vision to others, and how to become sustainable as a business.

Who is this workshop for?
This workshop if for anyone looking to start a social business that will benefit their local community and be kind to the planet. Come along if you have an idea that you want to explore or a have just started out. Whether you are unemployed, a professional looking for a new direction, a volunteer, or part of a community group, come and explore how your ideas can lead to sustainable social change.
About the speakers
Martin Downes is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and the Learning and Development Programme Lead at the Wales Co-operative Centre. Martin regularly giving talks, lectures, and workshops on social enterprise at universities, colleges, and start-up programmes across Wales. Martin is the creator of the Hack of Kindness, an innovative social enterprise hackathon model that has engaged hundreds of people across Wales in developing social business ideas, and the architect of the Cambria Fellowship programme. Martin previously worked with UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, the anti-poverty charity Purple Shoots, and ran his own start-up creative agency Luminous Media.
Tom Addiscott is the Project Manager for the Heel the High Street project in RCT. For the last few years Tom has been working as a Business Advisor for Social Business Wales New Start at Wales Co-operative Centre supporting start-up social enterprises and is also a director of a social enterprise in RCT working with young people.

The project
The project, due to run up to September 2022, is an exciting place-based pilot centred around a business incubation and information hub. The aim of the project is to embrace opportunities for the development of local businesses which address needs in the Cynon Valley community. There will be a particular focus on creating new initiatives around sustainable food production and tackling climate change, supported by business development workshops and grants of up to £10,000.
The key is bringing people with common interests together to create the change those in Aberdare and surrounding area want to see – creating jobs, prospects and local economic prosperity now and for the future.
The project includes:
- Business start-up and growth advice
- Business ideation and planning workshops
- ILM-accredited and CMI-recognised business development qualifications
- Grants for food and climate change-related business development
- Health and well-being one-to-one provision
- Networking.

Mae'r gweithdy hwn ar gyfer unrhyw un sydd am ddechrau busnes cymdeithasol a fydd o fudd i'w cymuned leol ac a fydd yn garedig i'r blaned. Dewch draw os oes gennych syniad yr hoffech ei archwilio neu os ydych newydd ddechrau. P’un ai eich bod yn ddi-waith, yn weithiwr proffesiynol sy’n chwilio am gyfeiriad newydd, yn wirfoddolwr, neu’n rhan o grŵp cymunedol, dewch i drafod sut y gall eich syniadau arwain at newid cymdeithasol cynaliadwy.
Ynglŷn â’r siaradwyr
Mae Martin Downes yn Gymrawd Cymdeithas Frenhinol y Celfyddydau ac yn Arweinydd Rhaglen Dysgu a Datblygu yng Nghanolfan Cydweithredol Cymru. Mae Martin yn rhoi sgyrsiau, darlithoedd, a gweithdai ar fenter gymdeithasol yn rheolaidd mewn prifysgolion, colegau, a rhaglenni cychwyn busnesau ledled Cymru. Martin yw crëwr Hack of Kindness, model hacathon menter gymdeithasol arloesol sydd wedi ymgysylltu â channoedd o bobl ledled Cymru wrth ddatblygu syniadau busnes cymdeithasol, a phensaer rhaglen Cymrodoriaeth Cambria. Y prosiect
Mae’r prosiect, a fydd yn rhedeg tan fis Medi 2022, yn beilot cyffrous seiliedig ar le sy’n canolbwyntio ar hyb deori busnesau a gwybodaeth. Bydd ffocws penodol ar greu mentrau newydd yn gysylltiedig â chynhyrchu bwyd cynaliadwy a mynd i’r afael â newid hinsawdd, gyda chefnogaeth gweithdai datblygu busnesau a grantiau o hyd at £10,000.
