Starting Out, Scaling Up, Selecting Teams!

Thursday 1st February 2018

5.30pm - 8.30pm

Sheffield Hallam Careers and Employability Centre, Hallam Square, Sheffield, S1 1WB

It's the start of a New Year and a time to consider new plans, new opportunities, and new ideas.

Maybe this year you're considering being your own boss? Perhaps you've always had an idea and just wondered if it might turn into a viable business proposition, something to run alongside your studies or a serious option for when you graduate.

Whatever stage you're at, we have a panel that will inform and inspire you (even if you're not thinking directly about your own business but considering a job role in an entrepreneurial environment we have a panel member who can help!)

Our line up includes Nelly Naylor of Nelly Naylor Photography, Paul Tomes of The Expo People, and Mike Kent of Kitlocker.

Nelly launched her business Nelly Naylor Photography fairly recently via help and support from The Enterprise Team. She's certainly 'hit the ground running' and was a finalist in The Enterprise Challenge competition as well as representing the University at a prestigious event in London. Nelly will share with us how she set up her business, found clients, created her own niche brand, and generated ongoing sales for her business.

Paul Tomes is now in his fourth year of business. After graduating from Hallam in 2010 he started his career in the conference and exhibitor sector. After a while, he decided he had the knowledge and capability to 'go it alone'. Unable to work in the same sector, he was forced to identify and win new clients. He successfully did this and now has repeat business from several high profile organisations. He's a regular at many exhibition centres including NEC, and Exel London. Paul has his own business premises and is now starting to build his team.

Mike Kent along with his business partner Tom Ward runs the very established business, Kitlocker. Mike and Tom started the business more than 10 years ago when they both graduated from Hallam. Kitlocker is now a trailblaing, award winning business employing more than 50 people - many of whom are Sheffield Hallam graduates and students. Mike will share his business journey but wil also highlight how his links with Hallam benefit the business and students. They offer placements, internships, and work experience opportunities.

This session is part of the 'Be Your Own Boss' event and will be a super opportunity to 'hear from the horse's mouth' exactly what it is like to truly be your own boss!

Whatever stage you're at, we can guarantee you will leave the session feeling inspired and motivated.

We're expecting a high demand for the session so recommend you book your place as soon as possible.

We'll be there from 5.30pm onwards and look forward to seeing you there.
