Starting to Write - Creative Writing Course
Thu, 3 Nov 2016, 10:30 – Thu, 8 Dec 2016, 12:30 GMT
Whether this is your first time to the creative writing classroom or you are returning from a long break, this course aims to give you confidence starting out on your writing path.
At Write Norfolk we strongly believe in helping all writers find their voice – no matter where they are on their creative journey. However, we know that sometimes the hardest place to start is at the beginning.
During our six-week Starting to Write course we aim to help new writers embark on their next adventure and give them the skills they need to firmly plant the seed of inspiration and watch it bloom. Writers who are returning to their craft and want to go back to basics or need help finding their confidence again are also welcomed.
Course: Starting to Write
Duration: 12 hours over 6 weeks
When: Thursdays at 10.30am – 12.30pm (Dates November 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and December 1st and 8th)
Tutor: Donna-Louise Bishop
About the group
This is a group catering for those with no or very little experience of creative writing who wish to explore the subject to improve or extend their skills, or for writers who want to return back to basics. All students will be new to the group and, it is hoped, will enjoy and benefit from the interaction with other writers as well as the support offered.
About the course
This is a six-week course (approximately two hours per session) with the option of signing-up to further courses, subject to demand, sufficient student numbers and venue availability.
The course will provide an introduction and an opportunity to find story ideas and motivation techniques to further develop some fundamental creative writing skills. There is also the possibility for the content of the course to be adapted according to student needs and experience.
Some of the key topics which will be covered include:
- What makes a story?
- Different types of stories
- Finding inspiration and ideas
- Next steps and getting published
The session is taught through a variety of different techniques including group participation and discussion, writing exercises, workshopping, and some tutor-led learning. There will also be an opportunity to share some of the writing completed during the session, with the group.
The aim of the course is to have a completed chapter from a larger piece of work or a completed short story. This goal is flexible and participants will be encouraged to share their own goals with the tutor.
Celebrating Student Achievement
After the course, participants will be issued with a certificate to confirm their attendance and participation of the course. On completion, participants will also have the option to be added to an online writing group where they can share their work with a supportive writing community.
