If you want to start a business, you need to learn what you don't know, and often the easiest way to learn is through listening to others' startup stories.
A lot of people talking about how to start a business but the best teachers tend to be those who have actually gone out there and done it.
Our startup evenings are informal yet informative events where we invite successful entrepreneurs to give us down-to-earth, honest insights on starting a business.
We're thrilled to be hosting the founder of Mallow & Marsh, Harriot Pleydell-Bouverie.
Harriot started her range of gourmet marshmallows last year. After five months, she won a one-year contract with Sainsbury’s, which offered to stock them in stores across London.
She recently turned down a Dragon's Den offer and went on to independently raise £150,000 after approaching potential investors in the food industry. Harriot has also raised through setting up a Kickstarter campaign.
You'll hear Harriot share stories about:
- Getting production going and samples out;
- Building a network and momentum;
- Making your first sale;
- Getting in the press.
You'll also have the chance to ask any question you'd like, whether it's about strategy, tactics, tools, or difficult lessons learned.
About the Speaker (@MallowandMarsh)
Harriot studied Fine Art and photography before leading emerging market research for a headhunting firm. She then founded De Bouverie, a fine jewellery website making independent designers more accessible. As a business, this became the learning ground for almost every mistake in the book, and is what she now refers to as her ‘MBA for Entrepreneurs’.
She was then light heartedly challenged to make marshmallows and founded Mallow & Marsh, which has gone from strength to strength and is now carried in selected Sainsbury's stores. Since the launch Mallow and Marsh has been ranked in this year’s Startups100 and Harriot has been shortlisted for Management Today’s 35 women under 35.

"Mallow & Marsh came about after founder Harriot Pleydell-Bouverie was challenged to make great marshmallows “after a debate over a couple of beers” – having whipped up a batch using a River Cottage recipe, the results were so delicious that she was immediately inspired to start what may be one of the UK’s first-ever luxury marshmallow business."
