Event description

Description

Funded by the Department of Health, the NIHR Child Prosthetics Research Collaboration is bringing together children, families, healthcare professionals, academics and industry experts to creatively and collaboratively address the biggest challenges for child prosthetic technology and service provision, through a series of Sandpit events. For a broader overview of this project, please see our Organiser Page or visit devicesfordignity.org.uk/starworks_cp/.

In the first of our four Sandpit events, we will be exploring the interface between the child’s limb and their prosthesis. This interface is integral to how well the child is supported in their day-to-day life. Key issues identified by multiple stakeholder groups at this interface include:

  • Excessive heat and sweating, which can lead to secondary complications, such as the development of sores and skin conditions. As a result, many children require a break from wearing their limb as part of their daily routine, or for several days at a time; impacting on their school, social and self-care activities.
  • Skin integrity of the residual limb – how can we support this load-bearing area?
  • Fluctuating volume of the stump (due to heat, activity or co-existing health conditions) can alter how well the prosthesis fits by the hour.
  • Multiple, long healthcare appointments may be necessary to create the right ‘fit’, impacting on school and work attendance for children and their families.

It is hoped that the creative collaboration between families, healthcare professionals, academics and industry experts within this Sandpit event will spark innovation at this interface site, with benefits extending out across these multiple, co-dependent issues.

We recognise it may be difficult for children and families to attend this particular workshop, given that it takes place on a weekday. However, we feel this will be a very worthwhile (and fun!) learning experience, and we will provide an authenticated covering letter to support childrens’ leave of absence applications to their school. Our host for the event, The Landing, is situated in Salford’s Media City, home of one of Europe’s biggest Television Media centres. It is also home to CBbeeies, Children in Need and other popular children’s media. Why not see if you can spot your favourite character whilst you are there?

We hope to see you there!
