About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours 30 minutes

This workshop is all about getting creative with the yarn you already have in your stash—something most of us knitters are very familiar with! Whether it’s leftover partial balls from past projects, those irresistible single hanks you bought without a plan, or even a pack of yarn that’s never quite inspired you to start a full project, we’ll explore how to make the most of it. Don't worry if you don't have a stash or you don't think you have enough, there will be plenty of yarn to play with at the venue.

We’ll begin by playing with colour combinations and swatching to see what works well together. Then, we’ll explore simple garment shapes that you can use to turn your swatches into a one-of-a-kind piece, designed to suit your individual tension and yarn choices. Options might include a drop-shoulder sweater or cardigan, a tank top, or—if you’re up for a bit more of a challenge—a raglan cardigan.

No advanced knitting skills are needed but you will have the oportunity to try out some other techniques, including, slip stitch colourwork and fairsile. This is a relaxed, creative class designed to help you make something truly unique, using the yarn you already love.

Some other yarns will be available if you do need to add some extra bits.

The workshop will take place at the Watershed in the village of Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire.

The class will take place between 10 am and 4.30pm and a lunch and drinks throughout the day will be provided. Please do let me know of any dietry requirements as soon as possible.

The village has a train station, with great links from Manchester or Leeds and is also 10 mins from the M62.

For any questions please do get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

I don't have a stash of yarn but would like to learn how to create my own garment.

That is totally fine - I will be bringing all kinds of yarn that you can experiment with and learn the different stitch techniques. You might then go ahead and buy similar yarns to complete the garment.

My stash is huge and I don't think I can carry it all on the train.

Bring a variety of what you have but not multiple balls of anything. Even small windings that you can swatch with would be great and in a note book, stick cuttings of the yarn with roughly how much you have of it.

My maths isn't great and I'm worried I will get left behind when writing the pattern.

Don't worry, that's what I'm there for. I will help at every stage and the aim at the end of the workshop is for you to go home with a pattern, either in written note form or on a graph that you can follow to finish your garment at home.

Are there things for my partner to do while I'm doing the workshop?

I'd say you could easily extend your stay over the weekend to make the most of the trip if travelling from afar. Slaithwaite itself is a lovelyvillage with plenty of cafe's and shops, the canal runs through it and you can do a gentle walk along it, or more serious hikes on the moors from Marsden.

I don't really wear knitted garments I'm more of an accessory knitter.

That is fine, we can work a pattern for a scarf or cowl with your finished knitted fabric.
