Motivational Consultation Skills utilises solution focused strategies, to transform health interactions away from problems and resistance, and towards co-operation, solutions and improved outcome

This course introduces the latest outcome-focused skills drawn from Solution Focused Brief Therapy that compliment traditional approaches to health behaviour change. Learning is highly practice-focused, providing quick and easy-to-use skills to benefit tomorrow’s workload.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

  • Provide participants with an introduction to the Solution Focused Practice;

  • Equip participants with key Solution Focused skills for improving individuals’ health-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviours;

  • Enable participants to immediately integrate Solution Focused skills into their routine practice.

From attending this course, participants should have the understanding, skills and confidence to:

  • Outline the key aspects and benefits of Solution Focused Practice;

  • Utilise ‘best hopes’ to proactively, sensitively and routinely address individuals’ unhealthy choices;

  • Develop ‘preferred futures’ to address multiple problem behaviours;

  • Select skills to make best use of short-time frames;

  • Use language to individualise care around individuals’ priorities, circumstances, culture, values and preferences;

  • Employ ‘scales’ to empower personal responsibility for health and wellbeing;

  • Utilise follow-up meetings to continue progress and overcome barriers;

  • Construct relevant and personalised interventions.
