About this event

The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) runs seminars for analysts to share insights from our regulatory work, promote the Code and highlight key areas of focus that support all types of analysis across government.

In these seminars we explore an analytical topic area from three perspectives – the regulatory view (OSR), a government department’s view and an external viewpoint.

In this seminar we will share findings from our recent research on statistical literacy and explain how what we found has shaped our views on how statistics should be communicated.

With the help of David Freeman (ONS) and journalist Anna Lawlor, we will explore what analysts can do to help the wider public audience understand, engage with, and trust their statistics and analysis.

The line-up for this event will be:

• Helen Miller-Bakewell, Head of Development and Impact, OSR

• Gail Rankin, OSR

• David Freeman, Head of Labour Market & Households, Office for National Statistics

• Anna Lawlor, a journalist and Co-Director of luminescence. Creator of a stats-centred programme, called Typical, for radio 4 last year (shortlisted for Data Journalism of the Year by the Wincott Awards 2023)
