Event description

Description

The Council for Disabled Children and the Sex Education Forum are delighted to present their inaugural conference: Statutory SRE – getting it right for disabled children and those with SEN.

For too long the rights of disabled children have been overlooked in the debate around high quality sex and relationships education. The government’s historic decision to place sex and relationships education on a statutory footing means that a public debate on their entitlement is needed more than ever.

This conference will include input from senior policy makers, professionals, parents, and children and young people themselves. It will mix debate about the future direction of policy with practical advice on how to implement high quality SRE in your setting or area.

Speakers

  • Dame Christine Lenehan: Director, Council for Disabled Children
  • David Stewart OBE DL: Head Teacher, Oak Field School and Sports College
  • Richard Vaughn: Deputy Director, Department for Education
  • Lesley Kerr-Edwards: Director, Image in Action

Choose from four interactive workshops:

  • Sex, Relationships and Making Choices in A Changing World: An accessible and interactive workshop with Face Front Inclusive Theatre

  • Teaching consent: Practical strategies for small group work with pupils with MLD with Sarah Duignan, Image in Action

  • Boundaries in 1:1 work: Developing safe learning environments for talking about sex with Claire Lightly, the sexual health charity FPA

  • The home/school partnership: Talking about sexuality with parents and carers (TBC)
