Staying Close to Experience: Practising the Existential Stance
Overview
To embrace an existential-phenomenological perspective in psychotherapy is to step beyond the comfort of certainties and enter a space of attentive presence. This lecture explores the challenge of sustaining a way of being that remains close to what appears — as it appears — with openness, humility, and respect for human diversity. Participants will be invited to reflect on the delicate balance between understanding and unknowing, theory and encounter, and to rediscover psychotherapy as an act of presence rather than interpretation.
Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event
- Recognize the challenges and implications of adopting an existential-phenomenological stance in psychotherapy, particularly the movement beyond certainty and fixed interpretations.
- Cultivate the capacity for phenomenological attention — an open, descriptive, and non-judgmental way of meeting what appears in the therapeutic encounter.
- Reflect on how respect for human diversity and the uniqueness of each lived experience can inform an ethical and grounded therapeutic practice.
Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?
- This presentation is designed for therapists, psychologists, counselors, and students in advanced stages of clinical training who are interested in deepening their understanding of existential-phenomenological practice. It will also be of value to practitioners from diverse theoretical orientations who wish to explore ways of working that emphasize presence, openness, and attention to lived experience rather than interpretation or technique.
- The presentation welcomes participants from varied cultural and professional backgrounds who are curious about how an existential-phenomenological stance can enrich their therapeutic work and support a more authentic engagement with human diversity.
How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?
- This presentation invites participants to re-examine their therapeutic stance through the lens of phenomenological attention. By learning to remain close to what appears — as it appears — practitioners may begin to move beyond interpretative habits and cultivate a more open, responsive, and ethical way of being with clients.
- Such an orientation can deepen therapeutic presence, enhance sensitivity to the uniqueness of each encounter, and foster greater respect for diversity and difference. Ultimately, the presentation encourages therapists to experience their practice not as the application of techniques, but as a living dialogue with the unfolding of human existence itself.
