About this event

The Prince Consort Engine will be in Steam.

Come and join our volunteers for an entertaining visit of exploration, discovery and learning. Visit our three listed buildings and see the four Victorian beam engines, one of which has been fully restored and will be steaming throughout the day.

You can explore the history of this iconic location, learning more about the crucial role it played in London's 'ground-breaking" sewerage system which continues to serve the capital today, and visit the "The Great Stink Exhibition" which shows why this feat of Victorian civil and mechanical engineering was so badly needed.

There is an admission charge for this event [plus booking fees]:

Age 16 and over - £18.00, Age 5-15 - £4.00, Under 5 free.

Light refreshments will be available from our Coffee Shop and the shop will offer some interesting items for sale - some of which are made by volunteers at Crossness.

Families can join the learning team for a free Make and Take craft activity and can explore the Crossness site with our children’s Activity Trail.

The nearest station is Abbey Wood on the Elizabeth Line [and Southeastern Trains] and we will be running a free shuttle bus from Abbey Wood to our gates where you can catch the narrow-gauge train (bus timetable to be confirmed the week before the Steaming day).

Our car park is about 600m from the main building and our Narrow Gauge Railway will be running to bring you to the main site from the car-parking area. Blue badge holders will be able to park much closer to the building.

You can also reach us via the Thames Path - our gate to the path will be open for our Open Day.

Doors open 10.00 with last entry at 15.00pm; buildings close at 16.00 with car-park closing at 16.30pm.

If we can't run the Prince Consort Engine for any reason, we will do our best to let you know in advance.
